TiVo To Let Users Record TV Shows Via Verizon Phones (Reuters)

Personal Tech Pipeline

NEW YORK (Reuters) - TiVo Inc. <TIVO.O> and Verizon Wireless on Tuesday announced an agreement that will allow TiVo subscribers to remotely schedule television recording using a Verizon mobile phone.

The service, called TiVo Mobile, will debut later this year, and pricing will be announced at that time.

Terms of the deal with Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications <VZ.N> and Vodafone Group Plc <VOD.L> <VOD.N>, were not disclosed.

Alviso, California-based TiVo remains the best known brand among DVRs, which can pause live TV and skip commercials, but it faces increased competition from rival devices made by cable operators. To combat that challenge, TiVo has worked to add unique features such as the ability to move recorded shows to portable devices.

TiVo customers can already schedule shows via TiVo and Yahoo Web sites for free. Many mobile phones with a Web browser can go to those sites and set recordings while on the go.

Shares of TiVo climbed 4.6 to $5.88 in morning trade on Nasdaq.
