Seagate Announces 12 GB, One-Inch Mobile Hard Drive

Personal Tech Pipeline

Seagate Technology announced today a 12 GB, one-inch hard drive. The new drive, which is designed for mobile phones and other portable electronics devices, has about 50 percent more storage capacity than the company's currently existing highest-capacity one-inch drive.

Called the ST1.3 Series hard drive, it's Seagate's second hard drive with perpendicular recording and the company's first drive that uses perpendicular technology in the one-inch category.

The new ST1.3 Series hard drive offers new features specifically targeted at mobile media consumers. The drive's size, 40x30x5 mm, allows for more streamlined media players product designs, according to the company.

As part of its G-Force Protection feature, which enables skip-free, reliable media storage and playback, according to Seagate, the new drive also includes an optional drop sensor. This will increase operational shock resistance 33 percent up to 2000Gs, enabling the drive to survive a 1.5-meter drop onto hard concrete or ceramic surfaces when properly mounted in a handheld device. The drive also incorporates Seagate RunOn technology, which enables the drive to automatically keep the read heads on track while the device is in motion.

The ST1.3 Series hard drive also offers 30 percent greater power efficiency than previous models, enabling system designers and manufacturers greater choice in power supplies and system power-on hours.

The Seagate ST1.3 Series is expected to ship in Q3 of this year.
