Apple's Web Traffic Riding High On iTunes Surge

Riding the wave of popularity for its iTunes music site, Apple Computer's Web traffic grew 57 percent year-over-year for November, Nielsen//NetRatings reported Tuesday.

The Web traffic ranking service said Google jumped 29 percent for the period and Amazon 16 percent as they finished in second and third place, respectively. Apple grew from a lower base figure jumping from 19,615 visits in November 2004 to 30,845 this year.

Google moved from 66,403 to 85,526 while Amazon climbed from 36,663 to 42,496.

"Among the top Web brands, fierce competition for share of online visitors continues to be a catalyst for the launch of new products and features," said Gerry Davidson senior media analyst of the ranking service, in a statement. "These additions appear to be spearheading much of the top Web brand growth, because they keep visitors interested and engaged."

The most dramatic results, however, were logged in the Web brands category where Nielsen//NetRatings found that visitors between age 12 and 24 were flocking to those sites in growing numbers.

PhotoBucket, an image-hosting site, grew a remarkable 1,492 percent in the November periods, from 983,999 unique visitors to 15.6 million. Other high percentage gainers were social networking sites MySpace, Facebook, and, which grew 752, 530, and 446 percent respectively.

Davidson explained the surge in those sites as examples of what youth-driven visits can accomplish. "Sites that strongly appeal to generation Y are those at which they can control the content," he said. "They provide a desirable service in an entertaining format."

Yahoo also recorded impressive numbers, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, which noted that the longtime Web leader collected nearly 104 million unique visitors last November. That figure represented a 10 percent year-over-year growth.
