Dell To Add Second Type Of 3G To Laptops

Dell, which earlier this week said it would build support for Verizon's 3G service into some laptops, said Wednesday that it also would offer built-in support for Cingular's 3G.

As with its support for Verizon's 1xEV-DO service, Dell said it will now sell PC Cards that support Cingular's HSDPA 3G service and will build the support into some laptops starting in the first quarter of next year.

Verizon has rolled out its EV-DO service in 60 markets so far. That service provides typical speeds if between 300 Kbps and 500 Kbps. However, Cingular has yet to widely launch its UMTS/HSDPA 3G service and has only said that it expects to do so in between 15 and 20 markets by the end of this year with most U.S. markets covered by the end of 2006.

HSDPA, with projected speeds in excess of 1Mbps, is several times faster than UMTS 3G service. However, Cingular has not said which service areas will get which type of access although it has said that all its 3G markets eventually will have HSDPA service.

Both cellular operators charge about $60 a month for unlimited access to their services and buyers of the Dell laptops will still have to acquire the service from one of the cellular operators.

Yes! I want one!
Sort of. We'll see.
No! It's too big for a pocket and too small for real computing. What's the point?
