Blinkx Launches RSS Video, Audio Feeds

Courtesy of TechWeb News

Multimedia search engine Blinkx on Tuesday launched a service that lets people choose and receive updates on audio and video content on the web.

The service, called SmartFeed, is based on RSS, or really simple syndication, a data format that's often used in aggregating updates for blogs, news sites and podcasts in software called newsreaders.

To use the Blinkx service, consumers can choose from more than 30 channels and click the "create SmartFeed" button to begin receiving the feeds, officials with the San Francisco company said.

As a video search engine, Blinkx differs from most general search engines, such as Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc., by using voice-recognition software to transcribe content in news outlets, such as CNN or Fox News; podcasts and videoblogs. The later are video versions of Internet-based personal journals, called web logs, or blogs, which are growing in popularity.

SmartFeed also enables users to receive podcast content directly into podcast receiving software, which enable people to download the audio to their digital players.
