RIM Says 'Workaround' Avoids Patent Claims

Research In Motion (RIM) has developed a "workaround" that will enable its devices to send and receive e-mail without violating a patent held by another company that has been enforced by U.S. courts, RIM's CEO told the Reuters news service Thursday.

RIM previously had agreed to pay NTP $450 million in patent royalties to settle a long-standing legal action. Recently, however, RIM asked the courts for help in carrying out the agreement, saying that NTP has refused to fully carry out the agreement.

"Part of what we have done is a workaround," RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie told Reuters. "We've completed it. We've tested it and we have a legal opinion on it, so it's an option."

Balsillie told Reuters that the workaround would work for all BlackBerry devices but would provide no other details.
