ZombieMeter Tracks Spam In Real Time

Courtesy of TechWeb News

No, it doesn't track shuffling hordes of flesh-eating zombies. Instead, Atlanta-based CipherTrust's new ZombieMeter monitors spam traffic from so-called "zombie" PCs that are spewing junk mail unbeknownst to their owners.

ZombieMeter shows the number of unique zombies per hour in real time, and using a global map, displays current zombie activity. Unfortunately, the map doesn't properly display in Firefox, the stand-alone open-source browser from the Mozilla Foundation.

So far this month, said CipherTrust, it's identified an average of 172,000 new zombies daily, with one out of five originating in the U.S., and another 15 percent in China. The geographic leader, however, is the European Union, whose 25 countries account for 26 percent of all zombies.

CipherTrust creates the ZombieMeter from data collected by its Ironmail appliances, which are deployed worldwide by some 1,500 enterprises.
