Online Ticketing Breaks Record With 'Sith'

Courtesy of TechWeb News

A pair of online movie ticket sellers claimed Monday that together they sold more than 20 percent of all tickets to the weekend's blockbuster, "Revenge of the Sith," a new record for e-sales.

Fandango.com said that its four-day take for the newest "Star Wars" film was $16.5 million of the projected four-day $158.5 million in domestic receipts, or 10.5 percent of all tickets. Likewise, MovieTickets.com, Fandango's main rival, claimed it had sold about 10 percent of all Sith tickets.

Both said that the weekend's results outpaced the former record holder for percentage of tickets sold online, the December 2003 "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

Tickets sold online by MovieTickets and Fandango can be picked up at theater box offices, or printed at special kiosk machines in many theater lobbies.
