Pope Domain Donated To Charity

The computer-book author who registered the Pope BenedictXVI.com Internet address days before Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected to the position has donated the address to a New York charity.

Florida-based Rogers Cadenhead donated the domain to Modest Needs, a charity dedicated to assisting low-income families cover unexpected expenses. "I was more excited at the prospect of being right about the name than getting the domain," Cadenhead told the Washington Post.

After the new Pope revealed his new name, Cadenhead said his server was flooded with hits, rising at times to more than 1,000 hits a minute. He said he has been determined not to offend his Catholic grandmother and never had money-making in mind when he registered the domain name.

Cadenhead has said he put a stipulation on the domain name that it would be transferred to the Vatican if it wants it.

While Cadenhead's experience with the Pope address has generated a lot of publicity, the experience hasn't been completely positive. On his blog, Cadenhead said he was interviewed by an "AV" site thinking the acronym stood for "audiovisual." In reality "AV" meant "adult video" so his comments ended up on a porn site inadvertently.

Cadenhead pointed out that holders of some other Pope sites weren't as generous as he's been. He quoted the holder of one unspecified site, who was offering his address for sale to the highest bidder, as stating: "I'll be keeping every red cent of this dough, thinking about blowing it on horse races."

Several Pope sites have been registered using variations of the Benedict title.

Yes! I want one!
Sort of. We'll see.
No! It's too big for a pocket and too small for real computing. What's the point?
