MontaVista Delivers Linux OS For Mobile Devices

The use of Linux for mobile devices gathered a bit more momentum Monday as MontaVista Software announced it is about to ship its Mobilinux operating system for wireless and mobile developers.

The operating system is based on MontaVista's existing Linux platform for mobile devices, the company said in a statement. The company said that its mobile operating system has advanced power management capabilities, can boot in less than one second and has a start-up and a small footprint. It is based on the Linux 2.5 kernel, according to the company.

"Unlike proprietary operating systems, Mobilinux is a scalable platform allowing mobile operators, handset manufacturers, and developers to build differentiated feature- and smart-phones," Kevin Morgan, MontaVista's vice president of engineering said in a statement.

The OS will eventually compete with the Palm OS, which PalmSource has said it will port to Linux. PalmSource is expected to give a timetable for that development at a developer's conference in May.

The company said the operating system will be available to developers during the current quarter.
