Taxi Cab Wi-Fi? Access Point Combines Wi-Fi, 3G

WLAN equipment vendor Telabria Tuesday unveiled a public access point that can use 3G cellular data service to connect users to the Internet, enabling access by Wi-Fi-enabled devices from unusual locations.

The Telabria AP-3G is aimed at solving temporary situations in which faster fixed-line methods such as DSL are not available for backhaul, the company said in a statement. It also enables Wi-Fi access in unusual locations, such as taxi cabs, the company said.

"The AP-3G represents the first fully mobile combination of Wi-Fi and 3G", Jim Baker, Telabria's CEO, said in a statement. "It allows the rapid deployment of Wi-Fi Internet access where no other connectivity is available. For example in a bus, coach or taxi, a single AP-3G can provide Internet access for any Wi-Fi enabled device, using the 3G data network to backhaul traffic and providing an Internet connection to anyone throughout a journey."

The access point supports WPA/AES 128-bit encryption and RADIUS authentication, according to the company. It has a built-in rechargeable battery but also can be powered via an in-vehicle 12-volt adapter.
