LONDON — Fabless chip maker Broadcom Corp. announced a "strategic partnership" Tuesday (April 19) with Nintendo Co. Ltd., whereby it would provide wireless technology for Nintendo's next-generation gaming systems.

Nintendo's next-generation console — codenamed "Revolution" — is based on multiple wireless technologies, Broadcom said.

Broadcom did not indicate when Revolution would be commercially available.

"The depth and breadth of Broadcom's wireless expertise will enable Nintendo to deliver the industry's most innovative gaming solutions," said Genyo Takeda, general manager of the Integrated Research & Development Division for Nintendo. "By integrating Broadcom wireless solutions into our next-generation systems, we can provide the high- performance gaming and connectivity capabilities that will delight users of Revolution."

Broadcom claimed its 54g chip sets are the industry's leading Wi-Fi solutions, according to the Forward Concepts market research company. Broadcom is also active in Bluetooth with its Blutonium chips.
